08/30/11  Engine 16, Truck 10, Rescue 11, Engine 1, Car 99 and Battalion 1 responded to 25 Brewer St for a report of a construction crane that had fallen over in the river gorge with a person possibly trapped. While en route, Engine 17 was requested to respond with Special Ops 1, and Quint 6 responded with Special Ops 2. Truck 10 was on location with a crane tipped over and partially in the water. They then confirmed a person trapped in the crane. Engine 5 responded as an extra company, and the Supply Depot was requested to the scene to aid in transporting rescue equipment to the scene at the bottom of the gorge. Truck 2 was requested as a rope rescue team, along with the Henrietta, and Bushnells Basin Fire Departments from the Monroe County Fire Bureau Rope Rescue Team. The Deputy Chief responded to the scene, & command requested RG&E reduce the flow of the Genesee River. The Red Cross also assisted with rehab for responders. The remote and dangerous location of the crane made it difficult to access and stabilize the vehicle for extrication. Unfortunately, the operator did not survive the incident. Engine 8 filled in at Engine 17's quarters, and Quint 7 and Midi 7 filled in at Engine 16's quarters. The Rochester Police Department Scuba Squad was also put on stand by. Due to the location and complexity of the incident, companies were on scene for approximately 7 hours. For audio and photos, click here.
